Prima and Viva are attractive when outdoor lounging, varied casual meals and a contemporary room matter as much as the headline attractions. Ocean Boulevard and Infinity Beach are central to that choice. A three-level Speedway adds a very different way to spend part of a sea day.
The compromise is that a ship with many appealing spaces still requires choices about weather, reservations and optional costs. Start with the day you want, then decide whether Prima’s original design fits better than the larger Aqua and Luna.

Ocean Boulevard brings outdoor life below the pool deck
This guide covers the two original Prima-class ships, introduced in 2022 and 2023. Prima Plus is a related development treated separately because its enlarged layout and slidecoaster change the experience.
The original ships move some of the focus away from the traditional top pool deck toward Ocean Boulevard, a lower outdoor circuit with seating and dining connections. That can create several ways to be outside. It also makes the relationship between public areas and nearby balconies especially worth checking.

Speedway, small venues and a plan for poor weather
The Speedway, slides and Galaxy Pavilion create a mix of outdoor and indoor recreation. Check charges and reservations for the specific activities rather than treating them all as included. If someone cannot use a ride, the remaining facilities should still justify the ship choice.
Small live-music and comedy venues can be a major part of the appeal, but a ship-wide capacity figure cannot tell you whether a particular performance will have available seats. Build a little flexibility into an evening rather than planning a sequence that depends on every venue being immediately accessible.
On a cold or windy itinerary, the value of Ocean Boulevard changes. You may still appreciate the views, but you should identify comfortable indoor alternatives for everyone in the party. An outdoor-led design is not automatically the best fit for every season.
Indulge Food Hall and optional specialty dinners
Indulge Food Hall offers a different casual-meal format from relying only on a buffet. The main dining rooms and other included venues remain useful anchors. Distinguish included food from separately charged drinks or specialty outlets.
Onda by Scarpetta and the other specialty restaurants can add variety when their menus interest you. Check the current dining-package allocation, reservations and any menu supplements. A package can be worthwhile without covering every restaurant or every visit you imagine.
For a port-heavy Mediterranean sailing, avoid filling every evening with a lengthy paid meal before you have examined arrival times and excursions. For a cruise with several sea days, a planned specialty dinner may fit more comfortably. The itinerary should influence the purchase.
The aft Haven and balcony privacy
The aft Haven is an important design feature, with dedicated elevators and facilities for qualifying accommodation. Not every suite-like room name carries the same access. Ask for the room’s category code and written benefits.
The relationship between lower balconies and Ocean Boulevard deserves close attention. A balcony overlooking an active outdoor area is different from one facing only open water. Look at the plan, room-category images and the exact location rather than assuming all balconies share the hero photograph’s view.
Solo travelers should compare the actual room and fare, not only the Studio label. NCL sells more than one kind of solo accommodation, and the presence of a dedicated lounge is a separate feature to verify. Two people sharing should also check whether the bathroom and storage arrangement suits their routine.
For outdoor lounging, food variety and go-karts
Choose Prima or Viva if you want the outdoor circuit, contemporary cabins, food hall and Speedway together. Their common design means route, room availability and total cost can sensibly decide a close comparison.
Choose Prima Plus for the revised pool/activity concept and slidecoaster. Choose Jewel class when the main purpose is an itinerary and you do not need large attractions. A smaller ship can be the better fit without being universally quieter or cheaper.

Other ships to consider
Prima Plus changes the ride and expands the design; it does not simply add every feature from Prima. Breakaway class offers The Waterfront in a different large-ship layout. Jewel class is the itinerary-led alternative.
