Cruise private islands compared: CocoCay, Ocean Cay, Disney and Carnival
Compare cruise-line beach destinations by included food, drinks, activities, access and the extra costs that change the value of a shore day.

Choose a cruise-line beach destination by the day you want to have without buying upgrades. If the included beach, food and basic facilities already suit you, the call can be excellent value. If the experience you want requires a waterpark, private club, cabana and drinks ashore, compare that complete price before booking the cruise.
The label private island is often used loosely: some destinations occupy part of a larger island, and inclusions differ sharply. Do not assume a beverage package or Wi-Fi plan follows you from the ship just because the destination belongs to the same company.
What matters for your decision
- Price the included beach day first, then add only upgrades you value.
- Drinks and Wi-Fi coverage are operator- and package-specific.
- Confirm pier or tender arrangements on the exact sailing; infrastructure has changed.
CocoCay: distinguish the included day from paid attractions
Royal Caribbean's destination map explains that ship beverage and VOOM packages work at Perfect Day at CocoCay. That can make the shore budget easier to predict for someone who already bought those packages. It does not mean every attraction, beach club or cabana is included in the fare.
Begin with the beach and pool areas available without an additional admission, then compare a paid attraction against the time you would actually spend using it. A family with children below an activity's requirements should check those restrictions before purchase. MSC Ocean Cay: check your actual beverage package
MSC's Ocean Cay FAQ says Premium Extra can be used for nonalcoholic and selected alcoholic beverages on the island, with separate conditions for minors and Yacht Club guests. Package names and availability have changed, so read the benefit attached to your booking rather than using an older Easy-package comparison as a universal rule.
Ocean Cay is worth comparing when the desired day is mainly beach time. Check food locations, walking distances and any transport assistance you need. A premium cabin's reserved area should be evaluated against the cost of that entire cabin upgrade, not treated as a small standalone shore purchase. Disney: a substantial included beach day
Disney lists lunch, beach essentials and several activities among the inclusions at Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay. Those inclusions can be useful for families who want fewer individual purchases during the day. Alcohol, rentals, excursions and other selected extras still need their own budget.
Compare the actual destinations and transport within them, especially with small children or mobility needs. Do not assume every youth facility operates exactly like the ship's club, and check the day's schedule before parents split up. If the included day already delivers what the family wants, spending heavily on a cabana may add less value than using that money for the room arrangement.
Carnival: Celebration Key and RelaxAway need different plans
Celebration Key's Island Eats benefit provides one eligible fast-casual meal or a discount on an eligible full-service entrée, rather than unlimited restaurant spending. Carnival's current help information says CHEERS does not extend ashore at Celebration Key or Half Moon Cay. Include drinks in the shore budget even if the package is active aboard.

Great Stirrup Cay and Bimini: verify the current offer
Norwegian's current Great Stirrup Cay page describes Free at Sea beverage coverage. This has been a changing policy area, so use the terms attached to your sailing and reconfirm near departure. The island's redevelopment also makes older photographs and tender advice an incomplete guide to the current operation.
Virgin's Bar Tab terms allow eligible drink purchases at The Beach Club at Bimini. Bar Tab is prepaid credit, not an unlimited package, so the island can use the same finite balance as the ship. These examples show why a destination's value depends on your booking's actual inclusions rather than a general private-island ranking.
Make the final comparison in dollars and hours
For each candidate sailing, price the ordinary beach day, the one upgrade you most want and any drink spending not covered. Check available hours, walking requirements, shade and the arrival method. If weather prevents the call, the ship and remaining itinerary should still be appealing.

Questions travelers ask
Do cruise drink packages work on private islands?
Some do and some do not. Royal packages work at CocoCay, MSC coverage depends on package terms, and Carnival CHEERS does not extend ashore at its Bahamian destinations. Check your exact booking.
Do I need to buy an excursion for a private-island day?
Often no. Many destinations provide a useful beach day with included facilities. Buy an activity only when it adds something your party wants.
Are private islands always docked ports?
No. Access can vary by destination, ship and conditions, and new piers have changed some older advice. Read the exact itinerary and current operator information.
