Virgin Voyages Bar Tab: How Much to Buy and When to Skip It
Understand Virgin Voyages Bar Tab credit, bonuses, sharing, Bimini coverage and unused balances before choosing a realistic amount.

Virgin Voyages Bar Tab is prepaid credit for eligible drinks, sometimes with bonus credit added. It is not an unlimited daily package. Buy an amount close to the premium drinks you expect to purchase, and skip it if the available denomination exceeds your likely spending.
Essential drinks are already included in the fare. The Bar Tab decision concerns purchases such as specialty coffee, fresh-pressed juice, cocktails and other premium beverages. You can pay individually without buying a tab.
What matters for your decision
- Unused purchased and bonus Bar Tab credit is not refunded at the end of the voyage.
- You may buy drinks for other sailors, but cannot turn the balance into spa or excursion credit.
- Eligible purchases at The Beach Club at Bimini can use the tab; ordinary port bars cannot.
Start by subtracting the drinks already included
Virgin’s drinks page lists essential beverages such as still and sparkling water, soda, non-pressed juice, drip coffee and tea. These do not create a reason to prepay a Bar Tab. A traveler happy with those choices and an occasional premium drink may need very little additional budget.
The onboard drinks FAQ distinguishes premium products and explains ordering with The Band. Build your estimate from the items you would actually purchase. Someone who enjoys barista coffee and mocktails can use a tab without drinking alcohol, but should still compare the amount with their expected bill.
For example, a hypothetical traveler expecting $12 of specialty coffee and other premium nonalcoholic drinks each day over five days has a $60 estimate. A large tab bought for a bonus would be difficult to justify. Those figures are invented spending assumptions, not current menu prices.
Choose the amount using expected spending
Check the denominations and bonus shown in your account before purchasing. Compare the cash price with your expected eligible spending. You do not have to use every bonus dollar to break even, but you do need to receive at least as much drink value as you paid for.
Suppose a promotion offered $350 of credit for $300; this is a hypothetical offer. Using $350 on drinks you wanted saves $50, about 14.3% of their retail cost. Using $320 still saves $20, even though $30 expires. Using only $280 means paying $20 more than individual purchases would have cost.
Include all planned days aboard and any eligible Bimini time, but reduce the estimate for long days in other ports. A port-intensive Mediterranean itinerary may create a different spending pattern from a Caribbean trip focused on the ship. Do not let an unused balance become a reason to consume more than you want.
Understand sharing and account responsibility
The Bar Tab FAQ permits buying premium drinks for other sailors. That flexibility can make one sensibly sized tab practical for a couple with different habits. It does not mean the credit becomes a freely transferable cash balance between accounts.
If you link or manage charges together, understand whose payment method is responsible for purchases after the tab is exhausted and for other authorized charges. Check the onboard account early so the intended arrangement is working. Buying a friend a drink is different from agreeing to pay every expense they place on a shared account.
Agree on which purchases the tab will cover, especially if several people are using it. Check the app balance during the voyage so you know when subsequent drinks will be charged to the payment account.
Know where the credit works and where it does not
The Bar Tab offer terms allow eligible drinks aboard and at The Beach Club at Bimini. They do not make every restaurant or bar elsewhere in a port part of the system. Our private-island comparison explains why a cruise-operated destination has different spending rules from an ordinary port visit.
Bar Tab cannot pay for spa treatments or shore excursions, and unused credit cannot be redeemed for cash. Virgin also excludes packaged purchases to take off the ship, such as bottles of wine or spirits and bags of coffee. Other onboard credits may have different uses; check which balance is being applied before ordering.
If your fare or promotion already includes a Bar Tab, subtract that amount from your expected premium-drink budget before buying more. Suite and loyalty benefits may also change what you need. Count the existing benefit once, then purchase only the likely shortfall.
Purchase before the cutoff and monitor the balance
Virgin currently permits purchase up to 24 hours before sailing and does not sell Bar Tab aboard. The cited offer terms also describe cancellation before that cutoff. Verify the exact deadline and any promotional conditions attached to your purchase, then save the receipt.
Once the voyage starts, unused purchased and bonus credit is nonrefundable at the end. Check the balance in the app during the trip, especially if you bought drinks for others or received a promotional tab. If a charge appears wrong, resolve it while the details are fresh rather than on the departure morning.
Buy a tab when the amount you expect to spend on eligible drinks exceeds its cash price. If your plans are uncertain or the smallest available tab is too large, pay individually. When comparing Virgin with another line, use the total cruise deal method to account for the essential drinks already included in the fare.
