Plan a European port day from the berth or tender landing to the attraction and back. A famous city in the itinerary name may be well beyond the terminal, and a train journey is only one part of the connection. Set your return plan before buying a timed ticket.
Choose fewer places when transfers are uncertain. Allow enough time for the village, museum or waterfront you most want to visit, then leave a return margin. The examples below identify the connections to check against your own sailing schedule.

Venice to Ravenna means a separate transfer
A departure described as Ravenna (Venice) requires a transfer to the actual cruise terminal. Royal Caribbean's Ravenna directions identify Porto Corsini. A Venice hotel is not within walking distance of this embarkation point.
Compare a cruise transfer, a private road transfer and rail plus the final local connection. Obtain the actual shuttle meeting point, departure, luggage arrangements and eligibility through the booking provider. Venice airport, central Venice and a mainland station are different pickup locations. If the booking confirmation does not specify one, resolve it before travel.
La Spezia to Cinque Terre: pick the ticket and villages
Allow time to leave the terminal area and reach the railway station before counting the train ride. The national park's Cinque Terre National Park: Cinque Terre Train Card includes regional trains and other listed services; its Cinque Terre National Park: Cinque Terre Trekking Card is a different product. Via dell'Amore access requires a reservation on the checked card site.
Compare individual train tickets with the appropriate card for your intended stops and date. Do not assume buying a card guarantees every trail is open or reserves every limited-access path. Choose one or two villages if that gives you a comfortable return; trying to visit all five is not necessary to enjoy the coastline.
Santorini and Athens: separate landing from sightseeing
For Santorini, confirm the tender landing used by your excursion or independent visit and how you reach Fira or another meeting point. The ship's instructions may route organized tours differently from independent passengers. Account for the return queue and the final tender, not only the advertised departure time. Avoid a plan that depends on one unverified transfer being immediate.
For Athens, the official Piraeus transport guide describes metro, bus and taxi options. Quoted journey times do not cover every cruise-terminal-to-stop connection. Confirm the berth, route, service date and attraction admission before deciding how much of the city fits.
Split and Dubrovnik reward a shorter route
Split's tourism board outlines a historic-center visit around the Riva and Diocletian's Palace area. Use it to choose a compact route, then verify the connection from your actual landing and any steps or surface limitations. A central sightseeing plan is easier to shorten than a distant excursion.
Dubrovnik port's visitor guidance distinguishes Gruž from the Old City and describes bus, taxi and walking options. Treat the published durations as estimates, especially in heat and traffic. Reserve time for the return transport rather than spending your last margin in an attraction queue.
Norwegian fjords: compare the whole excursion chain
For Flåm or another fjord call, verify the date-specific railway, boat and bus schedule with the operator. Norway's Best timetable section is a starting point for its products. An available outbound ticket is not proof that a return connection fits your ship.
Compare the local operator's product with the ship excursion for actual duration, pickup, cancellation and delay assistance. A ship tour may simplify coordination; a local booking may offer a different group size or schedule. Yes, when the actual terminal transfer, train schedule, selected visits and return margin fit your call. Choose the appropriate train ticket or card and check trail reservations or closures. Independent travel does not carry the ship tour's return-assistance terms.
