Silversea’s evening dress code changed for sailings on or after June 1, 2026. Its dated official guide says jackets are optional, refined denim and dress sneakers fit Elegant Casual, and that standard remains acceptable on Formal Optional evenings.
This is a meaningful change from older Silver Nova guides that required a jacket indoors on Formal Optional nights. Check the sailing date attached to advice before buying or packing clothes around it.

What changed in the current guidance
Silversea’s June 1, 2026 article describes Elegant Casual with collared shirts, blouses, tailored trousers, dresses, skirts, refined denim and dress sneakers. Jackets are optional. Guests may dress more formally on Formal Optional evenings, but Elegant Casual remains appropriate.
The guidance excludes distressed denim and athletic shoes from evening indoor venues. Choose comfortable footwear within the stated category. If you need particular shoes for mobility or medical reasons, discuss arrangements with Silversea before departure.
Use the dated policy when packing
Silversea’s June 2026 dress guidance identifies the effective date of the current policy. Use that date when checking an older packing packet: the document’s official branding alone does not establish that its instructions apply to your departure.
Keep the current policy with your travel documents and check any reservation-specific instructions. This is particularly useful if a travel advisor forwards a packing packet without a revision date. Ask which sailing date the instruction applies to instead of treating all conflicting documents as equally current.
How much formalwear should you bring?
Bring it if it contributes to the holiday you want. A tuxedo, suit, cocktail dress or gown can make a celebration feel special, and optional does not mean unwelcome. But a traveler who prefers a polished casual wardrobe can now plan around that choice.
Our suggested approach is one occasion outfit at most unless dressing up is a major interest. Add fresh shirts or accessories before adding duplicate suits. Try everything with the shoes you intend to wear, and consider whether it remains comfortable for a lounge or show after dinner.
Formal Optional counts on Classic voyages
For Classic sailings, the current guide lists Elegant Casual throughout voyages of seven days or fewer, up to two Formal Optional evenings for eight-to-fourteen days, and two or more for longer sailings. The onboard Chronicle gives the actual schedule. The Grill and The Marquee allow Smart Casual throughout the day and evening.
Use the itinerary to decide when you want a longer dinner. A late port departure or early excursion may matter more than the label on the evening. Do not book photographs or another time-sensitive service around an assumed date before the ship’s schedule is available.
Expedition clothing and landing equipment
Expedition voyages use Elegant Casual in the evening. For landings, consult Silversea's destination-specific packing resources. Confirm which boots, waterproof clothing and other activity equipment are supplied and which you must bring.
Divide the packing list into gear supplied by the operator, equipment you must bring, indoor clothing and travel-day needs. Confirm sizes early if you rely on loan equipment. Save space by reducing unnecessary formalwear before removing items needed for comfort and participation ashore.
Other lines with different evening rules
Oceania and Regent also now distinguish refined denim and dress sneakers from athletic clothing. Seabourn has different formal Restaurant arrangements on named ships. Luxury lines are not interchangeable.
