Evening Casual and Black Tie are separate standards

The answers describe Evening Casual using smart shirts, dresses and dark denim, and Black Tie with tuxedos, suits or cocktail dresses. A dark suit you already own can be a more sensible choice than buying a tuxedo for one voyage. A cocktail dress, trouser suit or formal separates may be easier to repeat than several complete ensembles. Try the outfit with its shoes before traveling, especially if you want to dance afterward.
Iona and Arvia have different example counts
The FAQ gives Iona and Arvia one Black Tie night for two-to-ten nights and two for eleven-to-fourteen. For the rest of the fleet, it gives two for seven-to-ten and four for fourteen-to-nineteen. Actual dates appear in My P&O Cruises and are confirmed aboard.
Those differences matter if you are packing for two weeks. One or two reusable formal combinations can still cover several occasions, but knowing the count helps plan laundry and accessories. Do not assume the Black Tie evening on last year’s sailing will occur on the same day of this itinerary.
Casual alternatives are ship-specific
P&O lists more relaxed venues by ship, including buffets and certain other restaurants. Its current FAQ says tailored shorts can be worn in the identified venues on Evening Casual nights, but on Black Tie evenings shorts are restricted to the buffet. Check the actual ship and venue rather than treating the word casual as a universal exemption.
If you want to avoid formalwear, map out a whole evening you will enjoy: dinner, a drink and entertainment in suitable spaces. A buffet meal is an easy choice for some travelers; others would miss the venues that drew them to the ship. Resolve that preference before booking.
Children do not need a second formal wardrobe
P&O’s current guidance exempts children aged seventeen and under from its dress codes on family-friendly ships. They can still dress up if they want. For a family photo, comfortable coordinated clothing may work better than a rigid outfit that makes a child unhappy throughout dinner.
