Cunard's Gala Evenings bring formal dining and dancing to the voyage. Pack for the restaurants and evening venues you want to visit: most use Smart Attire on ordinary evenings and a more formal standard for galas.
That does not require a different formal outfit every night. Ordinary evenings use Smart Attire, and selected casual alternatives exist. Plan which spaces you want to use, then build a small wardrobe around that choice.

Smart Attire after 6 p.m.
Cunard’s 2025–2027 brochure describes Smart Attire from 6 p.m.: collared shirts or evening tops with trousers, skirts or dresses, with jackets optional. Its Britannia Restaurant page confirms that timing for ordinary dinner service.
A few coordinating shirts or tops with trousers, skirts or dresses can cover dinner and an evening performance. Choose pieces comfortable enough to wear for several hours, with a layer for cooler rooms.
Gala Evenings are a different part of the experience
The Cunard brochure lists tuxedos or dinner jackets, dark suits with ties, evening dresses, cocktail dresses, trouser suits and formal separates among Gala options. The line’s Gala Evening page describes the celebration as an onboard occasion in its own right.
If you already own a dark suit or a dress you love, start there. Repeating it is entirely reasonable. A new tie, shirt or accessory can change the look with little luggage cost. Borrowing or renting an outfit can be sensible for a one-off crossing, but check fit and return logistics before choosing that route.
Themes add character; they do not replace the dress standard
Look at your actual My Cunard calendar before buying anything for a gala theme. A color accent or small accessory can acknowledge the theme while keeping the outfit usable at home. A themed novelty costume and formal eveningwear are not automatically the same thing.
Try your complete outfit before packing, including the shoes and any theme accessory. Keep accessories small enough to store easily in your cabin between occasions.
Casual alternatives need a ship-specific plan
Cunard identifies selected casual dining and entertainment spaces for people who prefer a relaxed evening. Confirm those spaces in the Daily Programme for your ship. Do not assume the entire ship is restricted, but do not assume a relaxed meal gives access to every gala venue afterward either.

A crossing wardrobe must work outside the dining room
A transatlantic crossing can involve breezy outdoor decks and cool days even when the embarkation city is warm. Give useful outer layers and comfortable walking shoes priority over duplicate formal pieces. Make a small evening capsule, then separately check the weather and activity needs of the whole journey.
If traveling one way with flights or several hotel nights, include those baggage constraints. Wearing a jacket during travel can save suitcase space, but only if it is comfortable and practical for the journey. Keep evening shoes that you can walk in; stairs, carpets and moving decks are poor places to break in a painful new pair.
