Volendam and Zaandam are the choices to examine when a smaller Holland America ship is an advantage in itself. Their appeal is a traditional routine of destination time, lounges, promenade walks and conventional dining. They are not small versions of Pinnacle with every newer venue retained.
The two current R-class ships should be compared mainly on itinerary, room and trip length. Their long service histories also make current plans more useful than old reviews that mention ships or facilities no longer in the fleet.
What matters for your decision

The smallest current Holland America design
The design places more emphasis on established public rooms and open-deck access than on a broad inventory of specialty venues. The smaller guest count changes the scale of the ship, but it does not guarantee that every lounge will be quiet or that every excursion will feel uncrowded.
Older Rotterdam and Amsterdam references can confuse this class discussion. Those vessels are not part of Holland America’s current operating roster. The present Rotterdam is a Pinnacle-class ship with a very different size and layout.
Volendam and Zaandam

The smaller inventory of venues means fewer simultaneous alternatives if one space is busy or the weather closes off an outdoor plan. On a long cruise, inspect the indoor places you would happily use every day rather than judging the ship from a single sunny pool photograph.
Families are welcome, but should look closely at the available youth program for the sailing. A traveler who wants a large supervised activity ecosystem or an elaborate attraction deck should compare a different class or line.
A familiar Dining Room routine with optional specialty meals
The main Dining Room and Lido Market are central, with Pinnacle Grill and Canaletto providing specialty alternatives. The appeal is a steady, familiar routine rather than a different signature restaurant for every night of the week.
Club Orange’s dining benefit uses the main Dining Room, not a separate Pinnacle-class restaurant. A scheduled Morimoto experience is likewise not the same as Nieuw Amsterdam’s permanent venue. Check the current format and package eligibility before adding it to the value calculation.
On a longer voyage, think about variety within your ordinary meals and the destinations where you want to eat ashore. An expensive dining package is not automatically better value just because you will be onboard for more days.
Oceanviews, private verandahs and promenade privacy
The accommodation mix differs from newer balcony-heavy ships. Compare oceanview rooms and the categories that actually provide a private verandah rather than assuming a standard balcony is available at the same relative price as on Pinnacle.
Promenade-adjacent rooms deserve a privacy and outlook check. An oceanview window near a public walking deck is not the same experience as an unobstructed view from a higher private balcony. Ask for the exact room’s arrangement and obstruction description.
For extended travel, storage, bathroom layout and proximity to the spaces you use every day can outweigh a small fare difference. Confirm step-free routes and specific access needs with Holland America; a smaller ship does not remove every threshold, distance or tender requirement.
For smaller scale and a traditional extended voyage
Choose R class for its smaller scale and traditional shipboard routine, especially when the itinerary is distinctive. Travelers who enjoy a familiar lounge, daily walks and time looking outward may find that a modest venue list is enough.
Choose a newer class if several specialty restaurants, more purpose-designed family accommodation or a broader music-venue mix are essential. The question is whether the facilities here support your trip, not whether the ship can compete feature-for-feature with a much larger design.
