Understand cruise daily gratuities, package service charges, prepayment and optional cash tips, including the published Royal Genie distinction.

Separate the daily service gratuity from the gratuity on a purchased drink, meal or spa treatment. Paying one does not automatically pay the other. Your booking may include some charges, so begin with its actual invoice before adding a standard amount to a budget.
The useful question is what you will be charged, when and for which service. Public policies can explain those categories. They do not provide a complete payroll statement for individual crew members, and passenger anecdotes cannot fill that gap.

Calculate daily charges for the whole party
At the September 19, 2026 check, Royal Caribbean's Royal Caribbean: Onboard service gratuities lists $18.50 per guest per day for non-suite categories and $21 for suites, subject to its stated exceptions. It also separately describes purchase-based service charges. Verify the applicable market and your reservation before using these rates.
For two guests over seven nights, $18.50 × 2 × 7 is $259. At $21 it is $294, a $35 difference. These are calculations using the cited rates, not complete cruise quotes. If gratuities are included in a fare or benefit, avoid adding them twice. Multiply by every charged guest rather than treating the published daily amount as a cabin charge.
Decide whether prepayment helps your budget
Prepaying can make the remaining onboard bill easier to manage. It can also bring a cost forward before departure. A rate increase only creates a saving if the operator's announcement expressly preserves an earlier rate for qualifying prepaid bookings. Prepayment is not a universal price lock.
Keep the receipt and compare it with your account once aboard. If daily charges appear despite documented inclusion or prepayment, ask Guest Relations to reconcile them. A discrepancy is easier to resolve with the invoice than with a memory of the fare description.
Read package totals before adding another tip
Royal Caribbean's Royal Caribbean: Beverage package FAQs describes a gratuity added to the package purchase except where prohibited. Look at the final checkout amount and the onboard receipt before assuming a blank additional-tip line creates another required charge.
Consider a hypothetical $100 package with an 18% added gratuity: its payable cost is $118. If a comparable quote already includes that charge, multiplying it by 1.18 again overstates the price. Apply the same discipline to dining and spa purchases, which can have different rates and conditions. A voluntary additional cash tip belongs in its own budget line.
Extra cash and Royal Genie service
There is no defensible universal cash amount for every traveler, cabin and service interaction. Decide what you can afford and whether you wish to recognize a particular service. Do not copy an expensive suite passenger's reported cash tip as a requirement for a standard cabin.
Royal Caribbean's Royal Suite Class policy describes the scope of Star Class complimentary gratuities and says Royal Genie and Concierge tips may be given separately at the guest's discretion. That is more precise than saying either every possible tip is included or a fixed Genie tip is mandatory.
What the allocation policy can establish
The published daily-gratuity policy says collected amounts are pooled and applied toward compensation across named crew-service groups. It does not disclose each worker's individual pay, contract or final allocation. Avoid turning a forum explanation into a claim about a particular employee's wages.

What do daily cruise gratuities cover?
They cover the service groups identified in the operator's policy. On Royal Caribbean the published allocation is pooled across several dining, housekeeping and other service roles; it is not a direct payment solely to your cabin attendant.
Do prepaid gratuities cover drinks and specialty dining too?
Not automatically. Purchased beverages, specialty meals and packages can have separate gratuities. Inspect the package checkout total and the daily-gratuity line independently.
Can prepaying gratuities protect me from a rate increase?
Only when the operator's specific rate-change terms say qualifying prepayment preserves the earlier rate. Save that announcement and the payment receipt; do not assume prepayment always creates protection.
Do I need to tip the cabin steward or dining staff extra?
An additional voluntary tip is your decision. Check what has already been charged or included, then choose an amount that fits your budget and the service you wish to recognize.
Are Royal Genie gratuities included in a Star Class booking?
Royal Caribbean distinguishes Star Class's included standard-service gratuities from optional separate tips for the Royal Genie and Concierge. Its published wording makes those additional tips discretionary; it does not prescribe a universal cash amount.
