Seattle: the terminal changes your transfer plan
Seattle's airport convenience can make it an attractive choice for U.S. travelers, especially when a nonstop replaces a connection. But the city does not have one interchangeable cruise pier. The Port of Seattle's official terminal lookup distinguishes Bell Street at Pier 66 from Smith Cove at Pier 91. Use your ship and sailing date to confirm the terminal before choosing a hotel.
A room near a downtown attraction is not necessarily a walkable cruise hotel. Price a transfer for the actual party and luggage, including any child seats or mobility equipment. If driving, compare the full parking bill with a hotel package and examine what the package includes: a room labeled cruise-friendly may not include both transfers or parking for every night you are away.
Vancouver: city access and border planning belong together
Canada Place gives Vancouver an appealing city-center departure. Vancouver International Airport identifies the Canada Line to Waterfront as a public-transit option, with the cruise terminal a short walk from the station. That may work well for travelers who can comfortably manage their bags. Choose a vehicle transfer when stairs, walking distance, weather or several suitcases would make rail stressful.
Vancouver is an international arrival for many travelers. Review the entry and transit rules for each passenger's nationality and travel document, including any authorization needed for arrival by air. Do not assume requirements are identical for driving across the border and flying. Compare the overnight stay you actually need
Flying in the day before is our default recommendation for either city. That hotel is part of the cruise price comparison, not an optional luxury to erase when one port looks expensive. If you choose an airport hotel, count both the airport-to-hotel movement and the next day's trip to the terminal. If you stay downtown, include the airport arrival transfer instead.
For example, a hypothetical $250 cruise saving from Seattle disappears if the combined flights and hotel cost $350 more than Vancouver. The reverse can happen just as easily. Compare the same party, baggage allowance, cancellation flexibility and return-flight timing. Avoid a tightly scheduled cross-border transfer on embarkation morning simply to rescue a superficially cheaper airfare.
Make the final choice in a short comparison sheet
Give each finalist five entries: desired glacier, usable Alaska port hours, total transportation cost, hotel/transfer effort and complete cabin total. Add a sixth for land-tour access if relevant. Once both options pass your basic travel requirements, choose the one that delivers more of your actual Alaska priorities at a comfortable total.
If the same route is available from either city, convenience can reasonably decide the result.
